2016 Red Rhône Blends

2016 Buxom
100% Syrah
Central Coast
Bottle Price: $65

Meticulously selected barrels from some of the world’s best Syrah vineyards make up this bottling. Crafted since 2009, Buxom is my flagship wine and the wine I am most proud of. Bien Nacido, Slide Hill, and La Vista have come together in one bottle to create an amazing experience. Jet black, candied nose of red fruits, hints of olive tapenade, currant, with a bit of smoked meat. A little Bing cherry, violets, and a slight nose of cola round out this wine. The tannins are firm but not grippy, showing very balanced early on. Enjoy 2018-2028

2016 GSM
62% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre
Central Coast, California

With a crimson color, the 2016 GSM blend is carrying a slight bramble fruit character of maraschino cherry glaze, grilled summer peach, black raspberries, and black olive. Also there is a interesting note of honey graham cracker on the finish that is pushing through this year in very delightful way. Aged in a combination of concrete vessels & French oak for 18 months. Decant now or drink 2020-2028.

2016 SGM

53% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre
Central Coast, California

Technically this is a brand-new blend for Nicora, the SGM. This SGM boasts a big dark fruit profile that makes my mouth water. A big chunk of Syrah helps carry this wine to a lengthy finish that seems to go on forever. This is always one of my favorite wines to make. Paso Robles is known for their blends and I feel this one will live up to the best of them! Blackberries, char, caramel, hints of vanilla, and black olive meld well together in the glass. Enjoy 2018-2024

2016 Bien Nacido Vineyard

100% Syrah
Santa Maria Valley
Bottle Price: $62

Bien Nacido Vineyard was always a special place that I looked up to in regards to producing some of the world's best cool-climate Syrah. After several years, I was finally able to lease my own special block of BNV that is farmed to my specifications. It is truly a dream come true! This is my personal favorite for the vintage since it is so interesting on the palate. This wine is a full bodied, mouth coating, long finishing elegant Syrah with a touch of cool-climate distinction. Yum! Dusty cocoa, violets, saline, charcuterie and a slight barrel char all lead into a seamless drinking wine. The very long finish is accompanied by dark cola, tangerine peel, mixed red fruits, and a slight matchstick nose. Decant for 1 hour or age 2020-2027.

2016 Euphoric
90% Grenache, 10% Syrah
La Vista Vineyard, Adelaida District, Paso Robles

When Grenache is right, it's right! Over the last few years I've been quietly experimenting with aging Grenache in a mix of concrete vessels and French oak barrels for various lengths of time. I'm now aging Grenache in concrete for 12 months then gently transferring it into French oak for 6 months.  Grenache is delicate and very pretty, why mask it with too much oak? Fresh-cut strawberries, rhubarb, dried raspberry, and beautiful aromatics of tropical fruit lead to a long lingering finish complete with dusty tannins and a hint of chalk.

2016 Russell Family Vineyard
100% Syrah
Bottle Price: $65

The RFV is always a home run for me at Nicora! With a southern facing slope to the vines and the high content of limestone, this place always keeps me coming back. Ripe, insanely dark & concentrated fruit, fresh acidity, and downright delicious. New World flavors of chocolate liquor, dark cherry, toasted oak, hints of sage along with some nice tight tannin to round out this classic Paso Robles big boy. This one is ready to go with a drinking window of 2019-2026.

2016 Slide Hill Vineyard
100% Syrah
Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo
Bottle Price: $62

Hidden in Edna Valley, the Slide Hill Vineyard is relatively new for me and has been one to teach me a few things. Most importantly it has taught me that patience pays off. The patience of waiting until the fruit is absolutely perfect before picking has been resulting in some extremely impressive wine. The 2016 is no exception! Exploding out of the glass are aromatics of blueberry, fresh cracked black pepper, shaved clove, and brown sugar. On the palate it is loaded with flavors of dark and bright fruits, tobacco, vanilla, and tightly wound sweet oak tannin. The laser-like acidity cuts through this wine keeping it fresh and ready to drink. Tasting great now but will continue to age gracefully for 8+ years.

2016 Shadow Canyon Vineyard
100% Syrah
Edna Valley AVA

Located halfway between Paso Robles and the Pacific Ocean, Shadow Canyon is always my favorite place to visit. Maybe it's the cold foggy weather, the overgrown trees, or the quaintness of this place, but it always seems magical. This tiny vineyard in a cool climate impresses me with its ability to ripen Syrah. Often, this is one of my last vineyards to pick, which allows the vine to ripen the fruit opposed to the warm sun. Black olives, blueberries, cocoa, coffee, and herbs. Hints of black cherry with a vibrant palate of stem tannin and butterscotch.

2015 Red Rhône Blends

2015 Buxom
95% Syrah, 5% Grenache
Paso Robles, California

Big, Bold, and Beautiful! Buxom never disappoints the crowd and is typically my favorite wine in the bunch. This year is no exception and grabbed my attention from the start. Made since 2009, Buxom, has been a main staple at Nicora now for 7 years. Hailing from Bien Nacido, Denner, and Slide Hill, what's to not like about these vineyard choices for this blend? Tons of olive, sage brush, cocoa, and freshly ground espresso jump out of the glass. About as dark as motor oil, Buxom has great viscosity and depth with an everlasting finish that seems to go on forever. Drink 2018-2025

The crowd pleaser! Leaning heavy on the Syrah this year at 60% of the blend, we can't help but notice how full of flavor our GSM is. The 35% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre really helps make this wine seamless and ready to drink. Hailing from Denner Vineyard, La Vista, and Russell Family, what's not to like about these amazing vineyard sites? Year after year it has been proven that Paso Robles is known for their blends and I find myself very pleased with our "painting of the year". Drink 2018-2024

2015 Bien Nacido Vineyard
100% Syrah
Santa Maria Valley

At Bien Nacido Vineyard the focus is always on farming the highest quality fruit, never compromising. Tiny clusters and a cool climate makes for some very intriguing wine. I often find myself lost in the glass trying to look around the next bend. Upon first whiff I note Dad's beef jerky, Mom's roasted stew, and fresh tilled wet clay. After several minutes in the glass, this wine really starts to open up and shine. A touch of brine, saline, and chalk all push through to the palate. Drink 2019-2029

2015 Euphoric
95% Grenache, 5% Syrah
La Vista Vineyard, Adelaida District, Paso Robles

Coming from deep within the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, this La Vista Vineyard Grenache has a red garnet color to compliment the beautiful aromatics. Grenache is meant to be elegant yet bold here at Nicora and I feel we've nailed it this year. Red cherry cola, dried raspberry, and juicy red fruits are coupled with a smooth long lasting finish. Euphoric explodes with flavor upon entry yet it still has that elegant finish that makes it pleasant to drink. Drink Now-2022

2015 Russell Family Vineyard
90% Syrah, 10% Grenache
Willow Creek District, Paso Robles

Always the show-off in the bunch! This wine couldn't hide it's identity if it wanted to, it just screams Paso Robles. Hot days and cold nights makes this wine big, rich, and full of jammy flavors. Amazing depth and complexity tells me this wine has a long life ahead of it but it's also tasting great today. Blackberry, milk chocolate, and sweet tannin has me begging that I had more of this wine to stash away for myself. Drink 2018-2028

2015 Shadow Canyon Vineyard
100% Syrah
Edna Valley AVA

Shadow Canyon is just a few short miles from the Pacific Ocean but you wouldn't know it tasting this wine. While this Syrah has it's delicate qualities, it truly surprised me with how much power it has. This could be our best Shadow Canyon to date! Big black fruits like ripe plum, black cherry, and black currant all come together nicely. With a long lasting finish that keeps you begging for more, you can't help but to keep trying to coax more out of the glass. Drink 2018-2026
