2013 Red Rhône Blends

2013 Buxom
96% Syrah, 4% Grenache
Paso Robles, California
198 cases produced

Black in Black! Black in color and black in fruit profile.  Buxom is a blend of the best barrels from the best vineyards that I lease land from.  This full bodied wine will turn your teeth purple with just a few sips!  Wet clay, chalk and gravel aromatics, lifted directly from the glass, spur from the soils that grows the grapes for this wine.  Cinnamon, roasted espresso, olive, ripe cherries and cola can be coaxed out of this wine after a long decant. Notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, and clove round out the palate.  Lovely now, though this wine will benefit from a bit more bottle age, so if you can hold out another six months or longer the rewards will be stunning.  Perfect for your cellar, the tannins will hold strong for the 10+ years.  Drink 2016-2026

2013 GSM
53% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre
Central Coast, California

WOW! This was the first word that popped into my head upon first whiff of this wine!  A very complex wine (it took me three days to write tasting notes) as the wine kept developing in the glass, and everyday brought a new layer to the complexity.  Very fresh and juicy red fruit profile lands upfront with a dark fruit finish that lingers for quite a while.  A bold yet elegant start leads to a bright and rich mouthfeel before notes of caramel envelop the back end of the palate.  Seamless now yet this wine will reward you should you have bit of patience. Decant 2+ hours or pop the cork and drink the next day.  Drink 2015-2023

2013 Single Vineyard Designates

2013 Bien Nacido Vineyard
100% Syrah
Santa Maria Valley
82 cases produced

A new release for Nicora! Almost everyone has heard of the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley and I was beyond honored when they called me up offering me my own block of Syrah. I had tried for a few years so the day I received the call was the best! This wine screams cool-climate Syrah and it has me very excited, even at its young age. Tons of blue fruit, barbecued meat, ripe plum and wet earth leap out of the glass. I can smell the vineyard in the glass and it translates to the palate as well. This one will go fast! Drink 2016-2025.

2013 Euphoric
92% Grenache, 8% Syrah
La Vista Vineyard, Adelaida District, Paso Robles
138 cases produced

Euphoric hails from the La Vista Vineyard, where I have leased land by the acre since 2010 – same block, same rows!  This wine always has me on the fence in regards to blending.  Do I fatten up the texture and make it jet black with Syrah or do I make a wine that tastes varietal correct.  I always try to stay true and pure with this wine and if you love Grenache then you'll understand this wine.  If you want something bigger and darker then reach for the GSM.  The 2013 Euphoric was fermented with 15% whole cluster, and aged in our concrete vessel for 18 months. Lot's of wet stone and chalk are present in this blend accompanied by copious amounts of wild strawberry jam, fresh floral notes and ripe raspberry.  The mouthfeel pops with fresh bright red fruits and hints of butterscotch linger on the finish.  Drink 2015-2020

2013 Law Vineyard
52% Grenache, 48% Syrah
Adelaida District, Paso Robles
110 cases produced

Warm baking spices and loads of tobacco jump out of the glass!  Aged in 50% new French oak, for 18 months, has made this wine the showiest of the bunch.  Allspice, hints of anise, clove and vanilla are all present due to the French oak that the wine was aged in. Dusty cocoa, black and red fruits, plum and black cherry round out this wine.  Smooth-medium tannin has this wine ready to drink with a one hour decant.  Drink 2015-2023

2013 Russell Family Vineyard
96% Syrah and 4% Mourvèdre
Willow Creek District, Paso Robles
98 cases produced

This is one of the steepest and most densely planted vineyards in Paso Robles. It often looks like it is covered in snow during the winter due to the copious amounts of limestone and no leaves on the vine. This wine has a ton of terroir from the poor soil and lack of water. Yields are typically one ton per acre resulting in densely concentrated fruit that translates into a rich and powerful wine. Dark cherry, crushed limestone and espresso all play prominent roles in this wine. A great streak of acidity leads to a milk chocolate and caramel finish. Enjoy now until 2022.

2013 Shadow Canyon Vineyard
100%  Syrah
York Mountain AVA
151 cases produced

Sitting only eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, Shadow Canyon Vineyard is situated upon York Mountain.  This site often soaks in cool foggy mornings and warm but not hot days.  This mild temperature pattern allows the fruit to develop complex flavors and aromatics of blueberries, red roses and violets. It reminds me of walking into a flower shop! Hints of dark chocolate and licorice compliment the firm tannins. Give this wine one year in the bottle to develop and become seamless. If you open it now, do decant for three hours. Drink 2017-2022.
